Historic District Zoning

historic downtown district of covington

Q: WHAT IS HISTORIC DISTRICT ZONING?
A: Allows carefully selected areas of historical and architectural significance in a community to be designated as historic districts. These districts have basic guidelines for major building alterations and new construction within the designated area.

Q: WHAT BENEFITS CAN HISTORIC DISTRICT ZONING PROVIDE?
A: Historic district zoning can help protect important architectural heritage from unsightly development. By helping to preserve the integrity and beauty of historic areas, historic district zoning can encourage citizens' knowledge of and pride in their community.

Historic district zoning can also offer important economic benefits. The creation of such a zone tends to stabilize and even improve property values by encouraging the maintenance and upgrading of buildings within the zone.
